WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Waukesha County moved a step closer to finalizing the sale of the UW-Milwaukee at Waukesha campus Tuesday, according to the county executive's office, with the Board of Supervisors approving an ordinance to authorize the sale of the campus on University Drive.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee announced the campus closure back in 2024, and since then, the county says, officials have been working with city partners to support redevelopment.

The proposal involves a mixed residential development including roughly 70 single-family homes and about 600 market-rate multifamily units.

“Waukesha County carefully evaluated a plan that prioritized land compatibility, mixed residential use, neighborhood feedback, open space and connectivity to ensure a high-quality fit with surrounding areas,” Waukesha County Parks and Land Use Director Dale Shaver said.

The county says the project will next move to the City of Waukesha Plan Commission and then to Waukesha's Common Council. They say demolition of the campus could begin in early 2027, pending approvals.
