MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee Police Department officer is recovering after being shot last week.

The Milwaukee Police Association (MPA) identified that officer as Daniel Gonzales and said he faces a long road to recovery.

Officer Gonzales was shot twice near 27th and Wisconsin on Feb. 12, by a suspect wielding a semiautomatic rifle.

He was shot once in the side of the chest and once in the calf.

The MPA said Gonzales was rushed to a level 1 trauma center and into emergency surgery.

The union added Gonzales later underwent a second surgery to repair his calf.

In a new photo taken in his hospital room, Gonzales smiled while holding two thumbs up.

The MPA says the two surgeries Officer Gonzales has had have been successful. He now faces a lengthy road to recovery.

This isn't the first time Gonzales has made news.

Back in 2017, CBS News followed then-recruit Daniel Gonzales through MPD's training course.

Now an eight-year veteran of the force, the MPA says Gonzales will be out of action for a while.

The union says he'll miss many hours of work, including many opportunities to earn overtime pay.

They're promoting a fundraiser to help the Gonzales family. They added Gonzales's wife will also miss work to help in his recovery.

The police association is asking anyone able to donate to a fund that will go directly to Gonzales and his family during his rehab.

Per MPD standard operating procedure, body camera video of the critical incident will be released to the public by Feb. 27.
