Officers respond to report of shots fired on UW-Whitewater at Rock County campus, no active threat identified; officials give the all-clear

JANESVILLE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The UW-Whitewater Police and Rock County Law Enforcement have identified no active life safety threat on the Rock County Campus. 

In a press conference Friday afternoon, officials believe that the reports of shots fired were actually fireworks set off near campus. 


In a press release, officers responded to a shots fired call in the area of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County campus Friday, Jan. 23. 

Officials locked down the campus upon arrival and a search was done and completed. 

Officers found no evidence that shots were fired on campus. A preliminary investigation indicates the source of the shots were fireworks set off near campus. 

No injuries were reported. 

The investigation is ongoing, but there is no danger to the public at this time.

According to the Rock County Sheriff's Office, law enforcement responded to the area for a shots fired call. 

They say no active threat has been identified at this time. 

The public is asked to stay clear of the area.

There is no active threat or emergency on the Whitewater campus, according to the university.
