LANNON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- On Friday night, June 16, a hometown amateur baseball team got a big league boost.
Before the Milwaukee Beavers game, former Chicago Cubs public address announcer and longtime professional singer Wayne Messmer sang the anthem in person.
The Beavers are members of the Land O' Lakes baseball league and play their home games at Village Park in Lannon.
For years, they've played a recording of Messmer's rendition of the anthem before every game.
Recently Messmer saw a video the Beavers posted online, and he offered to sing in person.
He's performed for decades at NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball games, and he notably sang during the Cubs' World Series run in 2016.
Before the game, Messmer told us, "This just seemed like a bunch of nice guys, and they were so appreciative when I called and said I want to do this and I'd be willing to do it, that it's kind of a warm fuzzy feeling. And I got the cap that I wanted."
Beavers Player/Manager Justin Barkhurst said, "Community baseball like this is an age-old tradition that must honored and preserved, so he recognizes the importance of community baseball and coming together."
Messmer and his wife Kathleen are in Milwaukee because they're taking part in this weekend's Stars and Stripes Honor Flight sendoff ceremony at Mitchell Airport.
