Promote seeking help: Milwaukee County leaders recognize Suicide Prevention Month

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE COUNTY (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and Milwaukee health officials on Monday, Sept. 15 joined together to acknowledge Suicide Prevention Month.

They are using this time to share resources, spark meaningful action and spread awareness of the challenges many face.

Crowley has worked with the county to strengthen the Behavioral Health Services programs in many ways, including a better mental health emergency center and a 24-hour Crisis Line.

"Crisis is defined by the individual experiencing it, right? So, there's a spectrum of severity that individuals navigate," said Andrea Nauer Waldschmidt, psychiatric crisis services coordinator. "The more we can discuss wellness I think the better off that we are. It really belongs to the neighbors among us to be able to notice that in an individual, have a natural conversation and promote seeking help at that time."

Along with this event, Milwaukee County remains committed to continue their pursuit of breaking the stigma around mental illness.
