RACINE COUNTY (CBS 58) -- More than one-third of Racine's Common Council members have decided to initiate a boycott over what they're calling "an erosion of their legislative authority and a departure from core principles of city governance."

Alderwoman Melissa Kaprelian is part of the boycott and says that multiple attempts to bring important matters before the council have been blocked or delayed, hindering their ability to address pressing community needs. They are also concerned in reduced transparency in government operations, and the handling of communications and committee reports.

The boycotting members, which include six Common Council representatives, say this is necessary because:

Among the Common Council demands are:

1. A thorough review and revision of recent ordinance changes that have altered the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches of city government.
2. Reinstatement of the Council's rightful authority to set its own agenda and bring matters of public concern before the body for discussion and vote.

The boycotting members include Alder Jeff Coe (District 1), Alder Olivia Turquoise Davis (District 3), Alder Melissa Kaprelian (District 5), Alderman Sandy Weidner (District 6), Alder Henry Perez (District 12), and Alder Renee Kelly (District 13).

They say the boycott will continue until the council members' concerns are adequately addressed and proper governance is restored.

The Racine Common Council board consists of 15 members.

According to their website, The Common Council typically meets on the first and third Tuesdays of every month unless otherwise noted.

CBS 58 News have reached out to Mayor Cory Mason's office for comment.
