MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police were involved in a vehicle pursuit that ended with one dead and two officers hurt, Wednesday evening, Aug. 6.
Law enforcement attempted to make a traffic stop around 7:17 p.m. after observing a car driving recklessly and wanted for a felony near 19th and W. Hampton. The driver refused to stop, and a police pursuit ensued.
The pursuit ended when the fleeing car struck a tree.
The driver and sole occupant of the fleeing vehicle, a 17-year-old, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deovion Whiteside says his three-year-old daughter and her mother were in their second story home above the scene when the car hit the tree.
“I can’t even put myself in her shoes, she’s a mother who was by herself with her 3-month-old child,” Whiteside said. “It was fight or flight, she grabbed my baby, she did what she needed to do.”
According to the Milwaukee Police Department, two officers were taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries sustained while trying to rescue the driver from the fire.
Sources tell us an officer suffered second and third-degree burns.
Whiteside said his daughter and her mother had to get on the roof to get away from the smoke coming off the flames.
“My family could have gotten hurt over this,” Whiteside said. “I know people make wrong decisions but it comes to a point where it’s like ok we might affect the public or innocent bystanders.”
CBS 58 reporters observed the car, not on fire, up against a building with noticeable fire damage with dozens of police and fire vehicles on scene.
The fire is under investigation, and the extent of damage to the building sustained by the fire is unknown.
