Racine County Sheriff announces retirement, not seeking re-election

RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Sheriff Christopher Schmaling of the Racine County Sheriff's Office is not seeking re-election. 

In a press release Friday, Sheriff Schmaling announced that he will be officially retiring at the end of 2026. 

"I was blessed with the privilege to serve the citizens of Racine County for nearly 32 years," said Sheriff Schmaling in the press release. "I want to give a huge thank you to all of my supporters. Your trust in me to serve and protect you is an honor that I took seriously and will treasure forever." 

Sheriff Schmaling started his career in 1995 as a deputy sheriff and for the last 16 years has been the Racine County Sheriff's Office elected sheriff, having been re-elected four times. He is the youngest and longest serving Sheriff in Racine County's history according to the press release.
