RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- It would be great if we lived in a world where children would not need to worry about gun violence. We don't live in that world.
Wednesday morning, at Jerstad-Agerholm school in Racine, young students took a pledge to stay away from guns and avoid gun violence.
They heard from a young girl, not too much older than them. Angelina Gutierrez told them about her brother, who was shot to death almost exactly one year ago. A tough message for kids, but one that Angelina believes is important.
"Truly, I feel nobody should have to go through tragic things like that, especially what I faced and the pain I feel and still deal with today," said Gutierrez. "I would hate for someone to go through that, and I just want to put out as much awareness about how much this impacts our society today. And I think it's really important to start them young."
Students at other Racine-area schools and across the country also took the pledge Wednesday.
This has been designated as a day of national concern about young people and gun violence.
