Racine Woman dies after Suffering Medical Emergency while Driving

On Saturday July 30 at 7:11 AM, Mount Pleasant Police Officers were dispatched to a reported vehicle in the ditch or possible crash on State Highway 20 west of County Highway V, in the Village of Mount Pleasant. A citizen reported one vehicle off road in the field area, with the operator passed out in the car.

Upon the arrival of the first Mount Pleasant Officer on scene, a silver Dodge Caliber was located on the north side of Highway 20 in the field, well off the roadway. The driver did not have a pulse and was not breathing and the officer immediately started CPR procedures.

The Officer was then joined by a second Officer with a portable defibrillator, and an off duty Racine Firefighter who stopped to assist. CPR was continued on the 59-year-old woman until Paramedics arrived to continue lifesaving measures.

The woman was transported to Wheaton St. Mary’s emergency room by South Shore Rescue squad.

Investigation at the scene indicated the woman was driving west on State Highway 20 in the 12900 block when the vehicle veered off the roadway to the right. The vehicle entered the ditch, continuing in a west/northwesterly direction, entering the open field north of Highway 20. The Dodge continued through the field coming to rest in a small dry ravine east of  the 13200 block of Washington Avenue. No other cars were involved in the crash.

It is believed the woman experienced a medical issue while driving.

The woman, a Racine native, was pronounced dead at the emergency room.
