Neighbors help dig each other out after record snowfall

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) — The Milwaukee area saw its first major snowfall this weekend.

"Fairly surprised because most of the time you get half of what is predicted," said Mike Thate, West Allis resident.

Snowplows, blowers and shovels were out in full force Sunday morning, Nov. 30, as residents across Milwaukee cleared their cars, driveways and sidewalks.

"It looks like it would be fairly easy to shovel but the bottom layer is like six inches of wet heavy snow the top layer is more fluffy so if you haven't gotten through any of it since last night it's hard to get through some of it," said Thate.

In West Allis neighbors helped dig each other out of the snow.

"I was shoveling and Eric was snow blowing this ally here and came over and started helping me out and then he took over and finished for me," said Dave VanEperen, West Allis resident.

Eric and Dave have been neighbors for 10 years.

"We never met, first time we met," said VanEperen.

Eric says lending a hand is just what neighborly thing to do.

"That's what we are supposed to do we are Midwestern's that's how I was raise you take care of people I can take care of this a lot faster than shoveling," said Eric Lenz, West Allis resident.

Milwaukee saw a record snowfall amount with a total of 6.1 inches.

"I'm usually up north this weekend and we typically get snow on this weekend our first big snowfall its a little surprising for down here," said Jeff Kleba, West Allis resident.

As the snow started to fall, some had to adjust their holiday plans.

"I was up north hunting, and I came back early because we are having a birthday for my mother today, she's turning 90 and I came back to this, so I get to work before I go to a party," said Kleba.

As crews continue to clear the roads neighbors say they'll keep doing their part - helping each along the way.

"I'm just glad I'm done I can go in the house and have some hot coffee and relax for a little bit," said Kleba.
