The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and ESPN's Jeff Passan have both reported the monumental move.
Counsell spent most of the last nine seasons managing his hometown Brewers, helping Milwaukee to an unprecedented era of success with five trips to the playoffs in the last six years alone.
He will end his Brewers career as the team leader in wins, losses and games managed with a record of 707-625. He was a three-time runner-up for the National League's Manager of the Year award in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Counsell will take over for David Ross in Chicago.

A blockbuster move for Chicago, which had David Ross as their manager but will now go with Counsell, who had spent the previous decade with their division rival Milwaukee. @Ken_Rosenthal was on it.
Counsell getting five-year contract from Cubs worth more than $40M, league sources tell @TheAthletic. Will be highest-paid manager.
