'Reprehensible': Glendale mayor says reaction to 'teen takeover' at Bayshore Mall has been racist, hateful

GLENDALE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Police shared new video Friday from last weekend's "teen takeover" at Bayshore Mall

Glendale Mayor Bryan Kennedy says he's troubled by the reaction to that incident, posting on social media that his feeds have been flooded with hateful and racist messages.

While Mayor Kennedy says those who engaged in violence, threatened others, or pushed police officers must be held accountable, he says the kind of reaction he's getting from adults only makes the problem worse, saying in part:

"Accountability does not require dehumanization. And that is where too many have failed. When adults respond to a situation like this with racism and collective blame, we are not solving the problem; we are making it worse. We are modeling the very behavior we claim to reject: a lack of empathy, a rush to judgment, and a willingness to tear others down. We want kids to be civil and respectful; but the adults in my social media comments section seem incapable of modeling civility and Respect themselves. How will their children learn it?"
