RV trailer jackknifes closing highway I-43 for over 3 hours

MEQUON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Waukesha State Patrol was at the scene of an accident that took place on highway I-43 northbound between Mequon and Pioneer around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 3.

According to the state patrol, a retired couple was traveling on highway I-43 in a pickup truck towing a 20' to 25' recreational trailer, when the woman who was driving fell asleep. The pickup truck veered into a concrete barrier on the side of the highway and jackknifed, with the trailer rolling onto its side. This happened in a construction zone on the highway.

Nobody was in the trailer at the time of the accident. The pickup truck did not roll over and the couple was not injured. No other cars were involved.

Upon trying to get the trailer upright, its roof fell apart scattering debris all over the highway.

A portion of the highway was closed for several hours causing a long backup until the cleanup was completed around 11:47 a.m.
