Safety concerns outside Wisconsin State Fair after 2 people hit crossing the street

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- On Wednesday night, Aug. 12, two people were hit by a car while trying to cross the street near 84th St. and Kearney St. near the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds.

The 64-year-old and 28-year-old were sent to the hospital with serious injuries.

Samantha Owens lives near 84th and says walking to and from the fair is getting dangerous and has been for years.

“This is a family event, it should be safe for you to cross the street,” Owens said. “With the traffic now it’s a lot busier here so people are not stopping when pedestrians are trying to cross.”

Owens and her daughter go to the fair every day and sometimes use the crosswalk near 84th St. and Adler St. to get there.

“These 11 days are supposed to be fun for people and yet you stand here and you can’t even cross the street,” Owens said. "Somebody needs to do something, whether it’s the flashing sign here or a speed hump.”

Owens has been in touch with Alderwoman Sharlen Moore, who connected her with the department of public works, who connected her with the state, who connected her back with Moore.

“I will give you my paper trail of me trying to contact to get something done in this area to get people to slow down,” Owens said.

Moore tells CBS 58 that she has been in touch with Owens, sending her traffic calming resources.

“We want this resident, and all residents, to know that we hear them, we’re here to support them, and we are always doing what we can to help with what resources are available to us,” Moore said.

Danielle Obry was at the fair on Thursday trying to cross the street near the crosswalk and had to carefully avoid traffic.

“Being more on the cautious side I would say because cars don’t stop even if you’re waiting in a crosswalk pregnant,” Obry said. “It definitely is kinda scary.”
