Second teen charged in homicide of 12-year-old girl unloading groceries
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A second person has been charged in the homicide of 12-year-old Olivia Schultz.
Cornell Henard, 16, is charged with first degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime.
Officers responded to the shooting near 37th and Rohr around 6 p.m. Oct. 10. A criminal complaint says they located two people with gunshot wounds, later identified as 12-year-old Olivia Schultz and her mother, Celeste Wilson.
The complaint says Olivia was helping her mother and father unload groceries from the car right before the incident.
According to the complaint, two males were walking past the family's home as they returned from the grocery store. Olivia's father initially thought the two males were going to rob them; however, they continued walking past the home. He then saw one of the males remove a large pistol from his sweatshirt and hold it alongside his body. The father told investigators he was arguing with the two males, telling them there was no reason to have a gun out. When the two males were about 60-70 feet away, he saw one of them raise the gun, point it and fire 8-10 times.
Both Olivia and her mother were struck by the gunfire. Celeste Wilson was shot in the back but survived.
Olivia was taken to Children's Wisconsin where she later died of her injuries.
When questioned by investigators, Henard initially said that he was not involved in the shooting. He later admitted to being with someone "whose name he did not know" because he had just started hanging out with him. He claimed a man at the home began shooting at them and he fired his gun back two-three times.
When asked what he was shooting at, Henard said he wasn't sure, because he was running and was shooting back at the man. He then said he was unsure who fired shots first.
Seventeen-year-old Benjamin Garrett is charged with first degree reckless homicide and first degree recklessly endangering safety as a party to a crime. He pleaded not guilty before being bound over for trial in November.
Henard is being held on $100,000 bond.
A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday, Jan. 4.
