September declared Preparedness Month in Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- As natural disasters have taken hold from coast to coast across the nation, from fires in Hawaiʻi to Hurricane Idalia, headlines have proven to be a reminder to stay prepared for the worst.
Gov. Tony Evers has declared September as Preparedness Month across the state. This year, the campaign is making a particular effort to prepare older adults for disasters.
The declaration is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Ready Campaign, which is recognized nationwide every September.
ReadyWisconsin emphasized the importance of creating or updating disaster plans and kits in a press release, noting that the kits should include a three-day supply of necessities like water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit and flashlights.
People are also advised to include medical supplies and prepare for their pets' needs, while also double-checking insurance policies for adequate coverage, particularly for flood damage, which usually requires a separate policy.
In addition to home preparedness, the campaign suggests residents identify community-specific disasters and review available resources.
