MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Democrat Bob Tatterson and Republican Paul Melotik will face off Tuesday in a special election for an open seat in the 24th Assembly District.

Both are seeking to fill a vacancy in the district after Republican Dan Knodl was elected to the state Senate in April.

The Republican-leaning district represents parts of Washington, Ozaukee and Waukesha County.

Tatterson, a former volunteer firefighter and engineer from Mequon, said he decided to run to represent constituents that support women's reproductive rights, stronger gun laws and fair maps.

"Where I stand on important issues align with folks in the district, and I see there's strong alignment between what I believe, in regard to policy, and what people in the district believe in," Tatterson said.

Melotik, of Grafton, describes himself as a "fiscal conservative." He's been a small business owner for most of his life and has served 11 years on the Ozaukee County Board, and the Grafton Town Board for six years.

"Those experiences, I think, will be beneficial to be elected to Madison,” Melotik said. "My opponent has no elected experience and I think I'm a good fit for the district."

Melotik said his top issues include school choice and support for law enforcement and Second Amendment rights.

The 24th Assembly District now leans more Republican after the district slightly changed after the new maps were implemented in 2022. Since there was no primary, this will be the first election with the new district lines.
