Suspect killed in shootout with MPD officer near 37th and Wright, officer injured

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 23-year-old man was killed, and a Milwaukee police officer was injured during a shootout near 37th and Wright Tuesday night, Sept. 8. 

According to Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, officers on patrol near N. 39th and Meinecke saw a car matching the description of a vehicle wanted for a shots fired incident in the City of Glendale. Officers attempted to stop the driver but they refused, according to MPD, and a pursuit began. The chief says the driver stopped near 37th and Wright, got out of the car and ran from the scene, along with a second suspect. 

Norman says an officer chased one of the suspects, a 23-year-old man, to 37th and Meinecke, where gunfire was exchanged. The suspect died at the scene of a gunshot injury.

Police say they located a firearm in the suspect's hand, another in his waistband, and another in the involved vehicle.

The officer who fired his weapon, a 35-year-old man with more than three years of experience, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of a non-fatal injury and released. During a press conference Tuesday night, Chief Norman said they are looking into the nature of the officer's injury.

Police say one suspect is still on the run. 

Neighbors along 38th and Wright tell us they heard police cars flying by, with one home catching what looks like a pursuit on camera. People also told us they heard gunshots. 

One man who lives near the scene says around 6 p.m., police came up to his door, telling him someone was shot and a suspect was on the run, so he should get in his house immediately.

Neighbors say it's like a war zone in the area, with a lot of crime. A man was shot and killed around half a mile from the area Monday night. 

"Something has to happen because this is getting really out of hand," one neighbor said. "And the young kids can't even come outside and play, it's too dangerous over here."
