RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine Zoo is mourning the loss of Sydney the Emu.
In a press release, the zoo stated that after a sudden decline in health the zoo made a decision to euthanize her on Monday, July 21.
"Death is never easy, especially when you are not ready to let the animal go," said Curator of the Racine Zoo Dan Powell in the release. "Sydney lived a long and filling life despite her health issues in her earlier years. Her long life is a true testament to the dedication and love each of our keepers has for our animals."
Born in 1994, Sydney came to the Racine Zoo in December of 2002, quickly becoming a staple in the Walkabout Creek. She had previous health issues, but the staff worked hard to give her the best possible life, in doing so she lived for over 20 years.
The staff remembers her "spunky personality and extreme fondness for grapes."
"We will miss her deeply, but I am extremely proud of how hard our team has worked together to make these difficult decisions, putting all of our animal's welfare about our own heartbreak," said Powell. "Sydney showed us it was just her time. Her spunk and personality are going to be missed."
As Keeper Appreciation Week ends this Saturday, the zoo asks the public to keep their staff in their hearts during this time.
