Bay View bike store burglarized, $6,000 worth of e-bikes stolen

NOW: Bay View bike store burglarized, $6,000 worth of e-bikes stolen

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Bay View bike store says roughly $6,000 worth of merchandise was stolen after a group of people broke into the store late Thursday night, July 24.

Wheel and Sprocket says in addition to three e-bikes being stolen, the burglars broke two doors to get inside the store.

“Three younger individuals used rocks smashed through the front door,” said Collin Stevens, the general manager at Wheel and Sprocket.

Repairing a bicycle at Wheel and Sprocket is pretty standard work, but this morning, the Bay View bike shop was busy fixing their front door after a late-night break-in. Stevens says three e-bikes totaling $6,000 were stolen from the store.

“We lock up most of our stuff up at night just for this kinda thing. It’s just they had probably been in the store previously and knew what they were after. So, it was smash and grab,” said Stevens.

Stevens says the burglars tried to take more, but many of the items were locked.

“They tried to take this row and they’re all chained together, so pretty hard to do,” said Stevens.

Stevens says all three e-bikes have serial numbers that have been reported to the Milwaukee Police Department in the event the burglars try to sell the bikes online.

“E-bikes have become much more popular, so it is natural for that to rise,” said Stevens. “That’s usually what happens is that if they can’t sell them, they get dumped and maybe found somewhere so we do have the serial numbers out there.”

Milwaukee police say they are continuing to look for the unknown suspects. Stevens says he just hopes parents in this community keep an eye on their kids.

“Make sure you know where your kids are at night because these were pretty young kids and they were up to no good,” said Stevens.

Wheel and Sprockett says they hope to raise funds for the cost of repairing the doors at their used bike sale next week.
