The JUUL Epidemic – Have You Suffered an Illness?

Attention all parents of teenagers and all other e-cigarette users. Many individuals may have developed an addiction and have suffered negative health consequences due to their use of JUUL.

JUUL (pronounced “jewel”) is a brand of e-cigarette made by JUUL Labs Inc.  The vaping devices have become very popular in the past few years, especially among young people.  As of December 2019, 2,506 lung injury cases which required hospitalization and 54 deaths linked to vaping have been reported.

JUUL and other e-cigarette brands have been progressively gaining popularity with children and teenagers for the past few years.  The FDA reported in 2019 that e-cigarette use has increased 78% in one year for high school-aged children and 48% for middle school-aged children.

According to two new studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, more than half of teenagers who vape use JUUL e-cigarettes.  Mint pods are the number one flavor favored by high school children.  Due to theses findings, in November 2019, JUUL ceased its sales of the mint flavor.  This comes about a month after the company suspended sales of its other sweet flavors: mango, cucumber, fruit and crème.

A study conducted by Stanford University found that JUUL’s marketing strategy “was patently youth-oriented.” From their inception, JUUL aggressively used social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – to promote their vaping products.

JUUL pods contain a significantly higher concentration of nicotine compared to other e-cigarettes.  At 5% nicotine by volume, this is more than twice the concentration of nicotine than found in similar devices and traditional cigarettes.

Using JUUL vaping devices may be linked to serious medical issues such as:

  • Nicotine addiction
  • Pneumonia
  • COPD
  • Asthma
  • Respiratory failure
  • Collapsed lungs
  • Seizures
  • Heart attack
