‘Totally unpredictable’: Safety concerns rise on National Avenue after 2 people hit in 3 days
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - National Avenue has become a hotspot for traffic as more roads continue to close in the Milwaukee area for construction.
“All the construction is forcing people to come down National more frequently and it’s gotten a lot busier,” said Milwaukee resident Jordan Wegher. “With that comes a lot of reckless driving.”
On Monday night, 66-year-old Calvin Young Jr. was hit and killed on 54th and National.
On Wednesday night, a person was hit and sent to the hospital on 70th and National.
“National Avenue has always been a busy foot traffic area,” Wegher said. “It can be pretty dangerous as we’ve seen recently.”
Like Wegher, Andrew Plichta lives along National Ave, and has seen traffic go up, along with reckless driving.
“We have a 4-year-old, and my daughter and I, we take our dog, and you see people driving through parking lanes, it’s terrifying,” Plichta said. “It’s not worth the risk of getting hit by somebody who just doesn’t care.”
Plichta has lived in the same house since 2012 and is tired of seeing people unsafely just steps away from his front door.
“You’re gonna kill somebody, it’s as simple as that, I mean you’re saving yourself seconds and you might spend your life in prison, what is that worth,” Plichta said.
