MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- UW Health in Madison launched the only Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center in Wisconsin.

Doctors say the goal of the new center is to treat pregnant mothers and their unborn babies with birth defects, both during and after the baby is born.

The center treats a wide-range of conditions including congenital heart defects, spinal cord defects and more.

In the past, patients would have to make multiple appointments at several different locations, but now the doctors and technology needed for diagnosis is all in one place.

"It's devastating to be a mom and have and you know be told that you have a fetus, this unborn baby, with a surgical condition," said Dr. Inna Lobeck, pediatric and fetal surgeon. So I think that families can really be reassured to know that they have access to all of these specialists all under one roof."

Experts say in Wisconsin nearly two thirds of babies are born with a birth defect every year, impacting roughly three percent of all births.
