MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- UW Health led the state in transplants last year, performing more than 520 organ transplants in 2025.

The hospital set new records for both lung and liver transplantation, according to UW Health officials.

UW Health will celebrate 60 years of caring for patients this year. Dr. Dan McCarthy, surgical director of the UW Health Lung Transplant Program, said 60 years of transplants is about more than a number.

"It's about the things we learned to take better care of the people in our community, the clinical advancements, the research advancements," McCarthy said. "The programs we have now are wildly more sophisticated than what we had 60 years ago."

UW Health celebrated several milestones last year, including completing its 1,000th heart transplant and 2,000th pancreas transplant.
