UW-Madison: Visas of several international students, alumni terminated by US government

CBS 58

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) - UW-Madison announced Monday that the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records of several of their current and former international students have been terminated by the U.S. government.

The university says they played no role in these terminations, and UW is not aware of federal law enforcement activity on campus.

As of Monday morning, six current students and seven alumni on employment extensions have been affected by the terminations. In a statement, the school said a status termination "generally means that an affected individual should depart the United States immediately."

UW says while it is not believed the terminations are related to participation in free speech events or political activity, "the precise rationale for these terminations is unclear."

"While it is not uncommon to see terminations for many reasons, UW-Madison and peer institutions are seeing an elevated volume and frequency over the past week," the university wrote.

The school says International Student Services is in contact with the students affected, providing information about legal resources by request.

UW-Madison went on to say, in part:

"UW–Madison will continue working to learn more about why these terminations occurred and to communicate with affected international students and the broader UW–Madison international student and scholar community.
International students, faculty, and staff are important members of the UW–Madison community, and the university deeply values their presence."
