Veterans find healing through adaptive sports at MSOE

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Injured veterans from across the country gathered Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Kern Center to take part in an adaptive sports clinic focused on recovery through movement.

The two-day event, organized by the Wounded Warrior Project, began with a sled hockey session designed to highlight what participants can accomplish through adaptive athletics.

Michael Owens, a director with the Wounded Warrior Project, shared how the experience connects to his own journey. "As an amputee, I have learned through my own transition how important adaptive sports have been so cycling and running and power lifting have been really important in my own progress."

Adaptive sports specialist Nikki Entrup said the group quickly gained confidence. "They were nervous, they were a little nervous gettin' out there, but I think they’re really having a good time now and just starting to get a little more comfortable. It’s a learning curve."

The clinic continues Thursday, Oct. 9 with sessions in wheelchair lacrosse and wheelchair rugby.
