MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A big win for local tourism. Viking Cruises announced it will start sailing from the Port of Milwaukee.
Between April and September 2022, there will be about 20 trips that start or end at Port Milwaukee.
There's an eight-day cruise from Ontario, Canada, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one from Milwaukee to Ontario, and one from Toronto to Milwaukee.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says the city is expecting more than 8,000 people from around the world to start or end their trips here each year.
"This is a very exciting announcement because it again puts an exclamation point on how many people are recognizing what a fabulous community we have here," said Mayor Barrett.
Viking Cruises is also working with Milwaukee Food and City Tours to give passengers an opportunity to learn about the city's history and culture.
"With the passengers that are coming to Milwaukee they are going to all be flying in or flying out of Milwaukee, so there's this great opportunity that they'll be able to stay here longer and they'll be able to experience things, so that's extra hotel revenue and that's extra restaurant revenue," said Theresa Nemetz, owner of Milwaukee Food and City Tours.
