KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A public visitation is underway Tuesday for fallen Racine Police Officer John Hetland.
A day before Officer Hetland is laid to rest, dozens of uniformed officers and civilians are paying their respects at the chapel on the campus of Carthage College in Kenosha.
CBS 58 spoke with one of Officer Hetland's cousins who said the officer was preparing to retire soon and his death has been a shock to everyone.
Officer Hetland was off duty the night he died at Teezers Tavern in Racine. His cousin said that a police officer is never truly off duty.
An armed robber came in demanding money from behind the bar and Officer Hetland tried to stop the robbery. He was tragically shot and killed.
Police are still searching for the suspect and the reward for information leading to an arrest in the case has reached more than $75,000. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers, the Kenosha County Sheriff's Office, or Racine Police.
A second visitation will take place Wednesday morning, June 26 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. to be followed by a funeral at the chapel at Carthage College starting at 11:00 a.m. The funeral will include full law enforcement honors.
