Volunteers help clean up Milwaukee neighborhoods during community event
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Dozens of volunteers spent Saturday morning helping beautify Milwaukee neighborhoods during the On My Block Cleanup.
The event began at 10 a.m., with volunteers picking up supplies at the Martin Luther King Community Center on Vliet Street before heading out to collect litter throughout the area.
The three-hour cleanup also featured local faith leaders, who shared messages of peace, healing and community responsibility.
Volunteers said the event was about taking pride in the neighborhoods they call home.
"It feels amazing," said volunteer Joseph Wilke. "We went down to the lake and cleaned up a lot of cigarette butts, and whatever trash is down there. Anytime you do something good for yourself or the world, you're going to feel better about yourself."
After the cleanup, participants returned to the Martin Luther King Community Center for an appreciation meal.
The event was part of a weeklong series of activities organized by Milwaukee Community Crossroads.
