MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The president and CEO of the War Memorial Center has announced his retirement effective Nov. 30.

Dan Buttery, who has led the organization since January 2020, is reportedly stepping down due to personal health reasons linked to his exposure to burn pits during his U.S. Army service in Iraq.

A retired U.S. Army Captain, Buttery served 12 years and received the Bronze Star Medal for his service.

During his tenure, Buttery oversaw changes that included guiding the center through the COVID-19 pandemic and the launch of the Wisconsin Medal of Honor Exhibit in 2022.

Buttery’s efforts included expanding educational programs, veteran mental health initiatives and creating the War Memorial Beer Garden near the lakefront.

The War Memorial Center is currently searching for Buttery's successor.
