Waukesha police chief cited for firearm in carry-on bag at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- City of Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson was issued a citation after officials say a TSA screening check located a firearm in his carry-on bag at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.

It happened Tuesday, Jan. 17, just after 11:30 a.m.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office was notified a firearm had been detected and deputy sheriffs responded immediately. According to TSA, the firearm was loaded with a round chambered.

Chief Thompson was escorted for questioning per standard investigative procedure.

Officials say Thompson explained he had forgotten the weapon was in his bag. He was released and permitted to proceed to his flight.

Subsequently, Chief Thompson will be cited for presenting a weapon at a screening center, a Milwaukee County ordinance violation that comes with a fine of $767.50.

Officials say Chief Thompson was afforded no “special” treatment or consideration, nor did he request any.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, Chief Thompson said he was on his way to a conference to share the city of Waukesha's experiences with the Christmas parade tragedy when the incident occurred.

He said he was working at the Waukesha Police Department before going to the airport and did not check his carry-on bag which had the firearm in it.

The statement said, in part, "I am embarrassed in this situation and hold myself ultimately responsible. I believe in accountability and will be held accountable for the situation. I also understand that I am human and make mistakes. I am sorry for the negative attention this brought not only to me but for the amazing community that I serve at the City of Waukesha Police Department."
