WAUSAU, Wis. (CBS 58) -- In northern Wisconsin, voters in Wausau are reacting with outrage after the town's mayor took it upon himself to remove a ballot box after he argues it was not properly secure.

"You would think bolting it to the ground would be an appropriate thing before we send ballots out that says it's ready to go," said Mayor Doug Diny. "For all I know and for all anyone knows it could have been in the river."

According to state law, the mayor doesn't have the authority to remove ballot boxes. That is entirely up to the municipal clerk.

In response, city residents gathered in front of city hall to voice their concern.

"I feel it undermines our elections," said Nancy Stencil, Wausau resident. "It undermines the voters it's not giving people a chance to have an accessible way of voting it should be made easier not being made more difficult," said Stencil.

Some voters are now calling on the mayor to restore the ballot boxes, saying they deserve better from their elected officials.
