WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- People will be able to carry alcoholic drinks through public spaces in Wauwatosa's Village district on Thursdays starting Oct. 29, creating Milwaukee County's first social district, according to the Village Business Improvement District.

The trial, called "Sip Thursdays," runs through Dec. 19, excluding Thanksgiving.

Visitors can buy beer, wine and cocktails from participating bars and restaurants and enjoy them on sidewalks and inside retail shops, which will stay open later. Drinks must be served in shatterproof cups marked as compliant.

"We are so excited to be the first to bring this concept to Milwaukee County," said BID Director Maria Panno in a Monday, Sept. 28 press release.

Organizers say similar districts have boosted foot traffic in other Wisconsin cities.
