'Wear Orange Weekend' to raise awareness about gun violence in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Gun violence awareness advocates are marking "Wear Orange Weekend," including those here in Milwaukee. 

Safe and Sound, Wave Educational Fund, Moms Demand Action, and city officials gathered on Saturday,

June 8 to continue their calls for an end to gun violence, as well as a change in state and federal laws to keep guns out of the wrong hands. 

Several survivors of gun violence as well as mothers of victims spoke today. 

One of Wave's youth interns took the podium and spoke out about losing her friend, Olivia Schultz. She was shot and killed while helping her mother bring in groceries in 2022. 

"It's so hard to be so young and to lose a classmate. Her death was senseless, the guys were in the alley, and they started shooting at them for no reason," said Zariah Johnson, youth intern.

"We as young people have to set it up," said Johonson.

Those gathered signed a "Safe Summer Pledge," and went on a peace walk to honor those who have survived gun violence, as well as those who lost their lives and the families who mourn them.
