MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The countdown to the new year has begun, and law enforcement agencies have their eyes on the road.

New Year's Eve is a time for celebration, and for law enforcement at the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, they said it's time for them to continue to make sure people drive safe.

"We're going to be out there in full force, we're going to have squads obviously patrolling the freeways," said Sgt. Timothy Reymer with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

Hometown bars said they prepared for big crowds.

"Hundreds of people come on in they enjoy the drink specials, the atmosphere, the dancing and everything New Year's is here," said Anthony Luchini Owner of Kelly's Bleachers.

The annual holiday had hundreds of people gearing up to celebrate, along with considering their modes of transportation.

"I want to play it safe, never drive drunk, you know even after one beer, you don’t drive, you just walk," said Stephen Kokalis a customer at Kelly's Bleachers.

And while people paid their tabs, area law enforcement said there's been a startling increase in people driving while drunk.

"They're under the influence of alcohol, medication, illegal drugs and that poeses a risk for not only themselves, but also the motoring public around them in the area as well," said Sgt. Reymer.

Sgt. Reymer encouraged people not to drink and drive.

"Get a designated driver, Uber a Lyft, Milwaukee County Transit System, buses are free, so opt on the safe side and don’t assume 'oh, just because I only had a few I'm good to drive.'"

A sentiment felt by people planning on seeing a new year.

"It only takes one beer to be reckless and be in the wrong position and effect the rest of your life," said Kokalis, a customer.
