West Allis man charged in fatal crash during police chase makes first court appearance

Milwaukee County Court

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A West Allis man accused of causing a fatal crash in West Milwaukee has made his first appearance in court.

Nineteen-year-old Johnatan Prado appeared virtually from the hospital Friday morning, Jan. 9.

This past Sunday, shortly after 1 a.m., a West Milwaukee police officer attempted to pull Prado over near the intersection of Miller Park Way and Lincoln after he failed to stop at a red light.

According to the criminal complaint, Prado sped off but soon crashed into a boulder located in a roundabout median at the intersection of 37th and Mitchell.

Prado, as well as his passenger, 18-year-old Izack Zavala, were ejected from the car. Zavala died at the scene. Prado suffered several injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

"This is the epitome of what the community is fearful of, when we have these type of cases," said Hon. Barry Phillips.

Prado faces two felony charges including fleeing an officer and second degree reckless homicide.

Cash bond was set at $50,000. He is due back in court next week for a preliminary hearing.
