KEWASKUM, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Today marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks claimed the lives of 2,977 people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

Across the world people will remember and observe, but he tragic memory of that day hits close to home in Kewaskum.

The Haberman family marks another year without Andrea Haberman. Haberman was a former student at Kewaskum High School and she was just 25 years old when she was killed in the World Take Center on September 11, 2001.

It's because of her family, Kewaskum has a memorial that continues to educate future generations about September 11 and the impact it had on the families, the world and dozens of communities.

In the center of the memorial is a 2,200-pound steel beam that was recovered from the North Tower where Haberman was working that morning. 

Today, a remembrance ceremony will take place at the memorial starting at 1 p.m. It will honor the 18 men and women killed who have ties to Wisconsin. 

As the country marks 25 years since the events, Kewaskum is looking to grow its memorial with an education center that would allow people to visit year-round. 

"When we say 'never forget' we're talking about more than a date. We're talking about people who were killed, and the lessons that our country learned that day, so educating future generations is so important," said Fuzz Martin, past president of the memorial.

The capital campaign hopes to raise $4 million to create the new space. The inside of the memorial, much like the outside, would be designed around symbolism. 

"The entire memorial was built around symbolism, so the steel points to New York, it sits on a base shaped like the pentagon, each of the five points, point to a learning station," said Martin.
