Wisconsin DNR warns public against feeding deer in winter

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued a release on Tuesday, March 21 to urge the public to avoid feeding deer during cold winter weather.

The DNR noted that "supplemental feeding," such as leaving corn and other feed in backyards, can cause severe digestive issues and even death in deer.

Winter feeding also draws deer out of their natural range, increasing energy expenditure and disease transmission risks.

The DNR emphasizes that creating and improving habitat is a more sustainable solution. Deer feeding is illegal in over three-quarters of Wisconsin counties, with regulations in place where it is permitted.
