MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- In an effort to address the environmental impact of plastic waste, Laura Stewart, a Wisconsin resident and Executive Director of the National Association for PET Container Resources, joined us on Thursday, March 23 to discuss the benefits of PET plastic bottles.
PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, is a clear, strong, lightweight and 100% recyclable plastic. It is designed to be remade, making it a material of choice for America's beverage companies.
NAPCOR's recent Life Cycle Assessment compared the environmental impacts of PET plastic bottles to those of glass and aluminum containers, concluding that PET plastic offers significant environmental savings.
According to the LCA, if U.S. consumers chose PET plastic bottles over glass bottles for their soda beverages for one year, the environmental impact would be equivalent to avoiding the greenhouse gas emissions produced by landfilling nearly 53,000 garbage trucks of waste or sequestering the carbon in almost 1.3 million acres of U.S. forest.
