Wisconsin's next generation of hunters to take aim during Youth Deer Hunt
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is preparing for Wisconsin's Youth Deer Hunt, which aims to foster deer hunting traditions among young aspiring hunters.
Set for Saturday, Oct. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 8, young hunters aged 15 and under can participate to learn deer hunting skills under a mentor's guidance. Both state residents and nonresidents can take part.
Participants below 11 years old or those between 12-15 without hunter education must be mentored by someone 18 or older with a hunter education background and a current hunting license. For 12-15-year-olds with the necessary education, only age restrictions apply to mentors.
During any deer hunting season, including the youth hunt, hunters must wear at least 50% blaze orange or pink clothing above the waist.
Wisconsin DNR noted in their press release about the event that the weekend is a perfect opportunity to teach and practice safe firearm handling practices, including what they call "TAB-K," which stands for:
- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded;
- Always point the muzzle in a safe direction;
- Be certain of your target and what’s beyond it;
- Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.
New hunters even have an opportunity to celebrate their first harvest with an official certificate, which can be found by clicking here.
