MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Colorful boats, cultural performances, and friendly competition will take center stage as the Milwaukee Dragon Boat Festival returns for its 12th year.

During CBS 58 Mornings, Stephanie Wong, founder of the MKE Mahjong Social Group and co-captain of the 2026 OCA-WI team, joined us to preview this year's event alongside Milwaukee Dragon Boat Festival Program Director Lynnette LeClair.

The annual festival will take place Saturday, July 11, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Henry Maier Festival Park, marking the first time the event has been held on the Summerfest grounds after previously taking place at Lakeshore State Park.

The Milwaukee Dragon Boat Festival celebrates Asian culture and community while bringing together teams from across the region to compete in high-energy dragon boat races. Organizers say the event welcomes participants of all experience levels and serves as an opportunity to learn more about the traditions behind the centuries-old sport.

In addition to races throughout the day, visitors can enjoy a colorful Dragon Dance during the opening ceremony, cultural performances, food, and family-friendly activities.

Wong also highlighted the growing popularity of mahjong in Milwaukee. Through the MKE Mahjong Social Group, she helps introduce newcomers to the game while creating opportunities for people to connect and build community.

Race action begins at 8 a.m., with the festival's opening ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Final races are expected to begin around 1:30 p.m.

Organizers say the event is designed to celebrate diversity, culture, and community while showcasing one of the world's oldest team sports.
