MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee man died Tuesday night after a fire swept through a duplex at 61st and Stark.

Fire officials did not know the age of the man that died. But they said his wife did make it out of the fire safely. She refused medical attention several times.

Both units of the side-by-side townhome are uninhabitable after the fire.

Milwaukee police and fire crews remained on scene late Tuesday to investigate.

MFD Deputy Chief Will Kowalski said the fire started just before 7 p.m.

The closest engines were at another fire at the time. The next closest crews arrived within minutes.

The fire was in the basement and first floor of the building, and they were told someone was trapped inside.

Kowalski said, "Within minutes of our arrival on scene, we discovered one deceased individual in the building. Once the fire was completely put under control, we started doing an investigation and continued searches in both the building that had the fire in it and the adjacent home to ensure the fire was out."

No neighboring homes were affected by the fire, just the two units in the townhome.

The Red Cross has been notified to help the two families that were displaced.

No fire fighters were injured.
