12 new corrections officers graduate from MATC's Jailer Training Academy
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Law enforcement requires a lot of dedicated public servants who fill different and sometimes thankless jobs. In Milwaukee on Friday, Nov. 1, CBS 58 was there when a dozen men and women graduated from an academy that trains jailers.
Several correctional officers, who finished weeks of intensive training and testing at the academy run by Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC).
They will move on to work with prisoners in three different counties.
At first blush you might ask why someone would want to be a jailer, CBS 58 talked with a trainer who says it's a great job and a student who agrees.
"You have an opportunity to change people's lives that may not have had the best opportunity before. They're in a confined setting, but you have an opportunity as correctional officer to make a positive impact on their life," said Patrick Martin, MATC training director.
"I was taught to help out a lot and everything and I feel like getting myself into the correctional thing, I'd be able to touch people and help them understand there are people here that's looking out to see them do well," said Lawrence Williams, jailer training graduate.
MATC's Jailer Training Academy works in partnership with the Milwaukee County Community Reintegration Center, once known as the House of Correction.
