21-year-old driver accused in crash that killed 2 Marquette University students, scheduled for first day in court
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - One of the drivers accused in the crash that killed two Marquette University students is scheduled for his first day in court on Thursday, July 16.
Twenty-one-year-old Peter McColgan is accused of two felony counts, both being homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. He is facing one charge per death, of 19-year-old Scott Michaud and 20-year-old Noah Snyder on Sept. 5 of last year.
According to the criminal complaint, McColgan sped through the intersection of North 27th street and West St. Paul Avenue in an attempt to beat the yellow light. McColgan then collided with another vehicle, driven by 42-year-old Amandria Brunner, who started turning during the yellow light.
Per the complaint, vehicle data shows McColgan was going 53 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone and had the accelerator fully depressed.
Police say he had time to stop before the crash, and it is notable that there were 6 people in the car with only 5 seats.
Last month, Brunner was found not guilty in her trial. The affirmative defense was used in her case, saying because McColgan was speeding, the crash would have happened anyway. Despite Brunner was nearly double the legal limit for alcohol, and was high, didn't mean she caused their deaths.
McColgan took the stand in that case, pleading the fifth.
CBS 58 will bring you an exclusive conversation with a juror in Brunner's case last month and how Mccolgan played a factor in their decision along with updates as they are released.
