31-year-old suspect seriously injured after crash and shootout with Brookfield police
BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Brookfield police say a 31-year-old is seriously injured and hospitalized after getting in a shootout with Brookfield officers late Saturday night, Jan. 31.
Officials say they responded to a vehicle crash on Barker Road, north of North Avenue around 10:31 p.m.
When they arrived on scene, police began searching the area after reports that the individual involved in the crash fled on foot. While searching, the suspect fired at officers.
A 24-year-old Brookfield police officer returned fire, and the suspect was hit and wounded.
Crews then transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he is being treated for serious and potentially life-threatening injuries.
No officers were struck by gunfire. Police say one officer received minor injuries while responding to the threat of active gunfire.
The officer involved has three years of law enforcement experience and has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
Brookfield police say the preliminary investigation "indicates officers performed their duties courageously, professionally and within the confines of the law and department expectations."
