4 weeks out from Election Day, Crowley and Tiffany take on crime and abortion
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – The November election is four weeks away. Both candidates for governor were in Milwaukee on Tuesday addressing two separate topics. Democratic candidate David Crowley focused on abortion while Republican candidate Tom Tiffany focused on crime. Crowley made a campaign pledge related to abortion, while Tiffany gained an endorsement from the Wisconsin Fraternal Order of Police both traded insults about each other.
Crowley pledged to create a constitutional amendment to protect abortion access across the state. Which he says will safeguard other reproductive healthcare too.
“This amendment will establish a fundamental right to make and carry out decisions about reproductive health,” Crowley said. “Including contraception, fertility treatment, pregnancy, miscarriage care and abortion.”
Earlier in the day Tom Tiffany received an endorsement from the Wisconsin Fraternal Order of Police. The congressman claimed his crime policies will better protect Wisconsinites, taking aim at Crowley while accepting the endorsement.
“For years he has supported policies that would weaken criminal penalties,” Tiffany said. “David Crowley supported legislation to lower penalties for bail jumping. He voted against allowing judges to consider a defendant's criminal record, the seriousness of the crime and the threat to public safety when setting bail.”
Crowley was quick to point out Tiffany's record when asked about Tiffany's claims that he is soft on crime.
“We are talking about a guy who voted against releasing the Epstein files where they talked about kids as young as 14 being affected by what was going on,” Crowley said. “We are talking about a guy who praised the pardoning of the Jan. 6 [2021] insurrectionists, some of them which have been charged with child molestation.”
While Crowley spent his event saying Tiffany would ban abortions if elected, Tiffany gave a different answer when asked his stance on the controversial issue.
“A decade ago, when I was in the state legislature I voted for a five-month bill and that bill became law in Wisconsin and it is the law in Wisconsin currently and I stand by that law and will uphold it,” Tiffany said.
While Tiffany wouldn't say if he's pro-life or pro-choice, his voting record shows he's voted against federal abortion protections and supported a federal six-week abortion ban. He receives low marks from organizations like Reproductive Freedom for All and high marks from organizations like Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
