RICHFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) — An 83-year-old man died Sunday after a two-vehicle crash in Washington County.

The crash happened around 10:10 a.m. at Hillside and Pioneer roads in the Village of Richfield.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office said dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting the crash. Witnesses initially reported that one of the drivers was unconscious, and a passing nurse later reported that a man had no pulse and CPR was underway.

When deputies arrived, they found both vehicles off the roadway. The driver of the northbound vehicle was trapped and not breathing.

Richfield firefighters continued lifesaving efforts and extricated the driver from the vehicle.

Both drivers and a passenger in the northbound vehicle were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

The 83-year-old driver of the northbound vehicle, a Town of Polk resident, later died from his injuries.

The sheriff's office said its preliminary investigation determined the 83-year-old was traveling north on Hillside Road and stopped at the intersection before entering the path of an eastbound vehicle on Pioneer Road driven by a 72-year-old Sussex resident.

The crash remains under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office Reconstruction Unit and the Washington County Medical Examiner's Office.

The intersection was closed for about three hours while authorities investigated and cleared the scene.
