MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – AAA and city leaders are teaming up to combat red light running in Milwaukee.
It’s part of the "Take it EZ Milwaukee" campaign. On Thursday, a new study was released on drivers running red lights.
AAA says more than two people are killed every day in the U.S. by drivers going through red lights. In 2017, 22 people in Wisconsin were killed.
"Take it EZ Milwaukee" is a 90-day pilot project targeting four intersections in Milwaukee. There an increased police presence at 60th and Capitol, 27th and Center, Cesar Chavez and Greenfield and 35th and National in hopes to enforce the law.
“You have innocent people who are losing their lives because of reckless driving,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said. “Paying attention to our traffic signals is one of the most basic elements of a civilized society where cars are present.”
"Take it EZ Milwaukee" runs through October.
