AG Kaul announces proposal to keep guns out of hands of domestic abusers

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Attorney General Josh Kaul introduced legislation Monday, Nov. 13, to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.

In a press conference, Kaul said the need for the legislation comes from a 2022 state Supreme Court case when the justices ruled that people convicted of violent crimes related to domestic abuse still had a right to own firearms.

The AG says this proposal will effectively overrule that decision, barring abusers from owning guns.

"So, we're not asking the Legislature to expand restrictions that are in place, we are asking for us to go back to where we were prior to that decision in 2022," said Kaul. "By doing that, we can keep survivors of domestic violence safe, and we can help keep our communities in Wisconsin safe."

Kaul says he hasn't had any conversation with Republican legislators yet, but he hopes they'll join his Democratic colleagues to get the bill passed.
